The Footsteps Programme
- Footsteps is a dynamic rehabilitation centre providing individual programmes for children and young adults with neuro-motor disorders to develop and maximise their physical abilities.
- The children have a range of problems including cerebral palsy, cancer, or genetic disorders or neurological conditions as a result of a stroke or meningitis.
- The young people who come to Footsteps range from three to 25 years old and travel from all over the country, as well as Europe, to benefit from the treatment and to maximise their physical abilities.
- The dynamic centre now provides access to a team of highly experienced therapists who use a unique and specialised piece of equipment called the Spider, as well as traditional physiotherapy techniques.
- The Footsteps programme is a three-week long course of therapy usually comprising three hours of daily rehabilitation, five days a week. Whilst a commitment for parents and children alike, this length of programme has shown to be the optimum time for children and young people to gain maximum benefit.
- The programme is completely child and individual orientated. A younger child for example may enjoy learning exercises through play with hoops and balls and may need more confidence building, whilst a young adult may want to naturally push themselves to their maximum capabilities with each exercise, perhaps even read whilst being held in a particular position!
- The time and intensity of exercises are carefully tailored to each patient according to his/her specific abilities and needs. Whatever age and developmental stage the child or young person is at, they usually love to come to Footsteps.
- The programme is also aimed at confidence building, as well as physical development, both of which in turn often positively affect speech and cognitive capabilities.
